So you’ve noticed the bohemian (boho) home trend and want to get the look in your own home. Then you think to yourself: “Can I change my home interior every time a new trend arises?” And then decide to leave it as is…. Well, the good news is that going bohemian is actually easy, it’s here to stay for a while and doesn’t have to break the bank. You can opt for one room in the house to try it out but I prefer to have a theme throughout the home, so rather incorporate less items right through the house to give it the desired look. You can always add on these elements.
While my personal style of interior design is more minimalist, clean Scandinavian with high contrasts I also absolutely love the warm feel of boho rooms and try to incorporate some elements in my home. Still not sure what boho is or if its for you? Well, if you like the words: relaxed, warm, comfortable, eclectic, lived in and colorful… then boho is for you!

HOW TO BOHO YOUR HOME

ADD DIFFERENT TEXTURES

BASKETS •  MACRAME WALL HANGINGS  • NATURAL FIBER RUGS •  COLOURFUL PERSIAN RUGS •  SIMPLE WOOD FURNITURE •  UPHOLSTERY •  STACKS OF BOOKS… In bohemianism, the saying goes “more is more”, so add MORE! Hang tapestry, place mismatched scatter cushions on your sofas, add rugs, simple wooden coffee tables and plants.

MORE TIPS

INCORPORATE PLANTS & FLOWERS

Plants are colorful, textured, natural, lively and they can be incorporated into spaces in so many interesting ways. Whether the plants are woven in Macrame and hanging from the ceiling, framed in living walls or potted, plants are an essential part of any Bohemian look. My favorite flowers to add that boho feel are tan Pompom flowers. Cotton flowers are also an option depending on where you live.

DON’T USE TOO MUCH DARK / BLACK

If Bohemian is what you’re after, then try to stay away from large, black pieces of furniture or dark wood. Small dark elements however, can be added. Light, bright woods are what you want to look out for. It creates a textured and airy feel.

INFORMAL SEATING

The boho philosophy is all about chilling out and relaxing. Floor pillows, bean bag and soft ottomans are all great low-level, informal seating options to have, because informal and inviting are all key elements to the bohemian lifestyle.

MIX DIFFERENT LIGHT SOURCES

Think string lights, lanterns, candles and chandeliers and make use of all of them. Natural fiber pendants and string lights are a definite must when going boho and are readily available.

RUGS

Layer a vintage rug or Persian rug over a natural fiber jute rug. This will aid in adding more texture to your home. For the minimalist boho like myself, opt for only the natural fabric rugs.

PATTERNS

Play with different patterns. Zigzag with stripes or vintage floral print on Persian print. With boho there is little you can do to go wrong.

ADD VINTAGE

Incorporate vintage pieces to your home to add to the boho look. Be careful not to add too much vintage as it will give you a formal look and this is a far cry away from the relaxed and homely feel you’re going for. I would suggest a modern, simple light wooden table with vintage chairs. The chairs being the only vintage items in the room.
