Our current situation doesn’t exactly scream positivity and however superficial it may sound, not being able to visit the hair salon doesn’t secure a positive outlook on day to day life. Especially the lockdown life we’ve come to know in the last couple of weeks. HOWEVER, we can all take the time that lockdown is enforcing upon us to actually prep our hair for when we do (and we will) visit the salon again:
SCALP MASSAGE WITH ESSENTIAL OIL

Massaging your scalp will increase blood circulation and stimulate the activity of hair follicles. Making use of the inversion method is suggested by most beauty bloggers. Sit on a chair and flip hair over, also lower your head underneath your heart while massaging. Prepare essential oils (they are readily available at pharmacies and are under the essentials list) made up of heated Tea-tree- / Lemon-/ Peppermint oil. Massage for 10 minutes and leave the oil in for 30 min. Rinse and wash.
HAIR MASKS

![]() |
Hair masks / packs may not be readily available in this time, especially if you exclusively make use of salon products. A hair mask that I recommend is L’oreal Elvive Dream Lenghts. Its a self heating tissue cap with intense balm that locks in moisture and leaves your hair soft and silky. After use the cap can serve as a bath cap for the kids 😜. I’ve seen these available at Dischem & Clicks during lockdown. |
DIY
Another option is to make your own:
Crack one egg into a bowl, add 50ml double cream plain yoghurt, 2 teaspoons raw honey & 1 tablespoon organic coconut oil.
Whisk mixture for approx 5min.
Apply it to wet hair for 30minutes.
Rinse hair with COLD water and wash as usual.
Egg white is a complete protein. Protein benefits hair growth and strengthens hair follicles. The rich moisture in the hair mask can protect hair from becoming dry and thin whilst honey adds shine to hair & smooths hair follicles.
COLLAGEN
It’s no secret that collagen is a protein and the glue that holds our bodies together, giving our skin strength and elasticity and replacing dead skin cells as we age. Protein is used to recharge hair loss and make for stronger, desirable locks. Its such an easy supplement to ingest as the powder forms can also be added to tea and coffee.
VITAMINS A & C

All cells (incl our hair) needs Vit A for growth. This powerful vitamin also helps skin glands produce Sebum, an oily substance. Sebum moisturizes the scalp and keep hair healthy. Free radical damage blocks growth and cause hair to age.
Vitamin C is a antioxidant that protects against the oxidative stress caused by free radicals. Your body needs Vit C to create collagen. A shortage of Vit C prevents your body from absorbing iron, a mineral necessary for hair growth.
TIME-OUT FOR STYLING & COLOURING
Why style and color hair during lockdown? Give your hair a well deserved break to breathe and heal from all heat operated styling utensils and chemicals. Elastics also break hair and lockdown is the perfect excuse to let it all hang loose.
FINALLY…
Keep your salon owner’s number on speed dial …. as well as an option B …. just in case. As soon as we are notified of the lockdown lift date….. make that appointment!
